Lynda Lipsett - Musical Theatre

Lynda Lipsett is a graduate in Voice Performance from the University of Toronto and its Opera School.  She has had an extensive recital and concert career, performing with many orchestras, primarily in Ontario.  After studying with Bernard Diamant, and Maureen Forrester, she received a Canada Council grant and studied for a year with Martial Singher in Santa Barbara, California.  She holds a teaching degree and has taught in the school systems in Ontario and B.C., but focuses now on private voice teaching.

Along the way she has conducted many choirs, including one featured in a CBC documentary about Handel, on the 250th anniversary of the first performance of The Messiah.  (It is still broadcast annually.)  She has a church choir in Summerland and has conducted children’s choirs at the Penticton Academy of Music, Kelowna Community Music School and at Summerland Baptist Church.  Once, she conducted a choir of 1,750 children as part of the Canada Day project in Parry Sound, Ontario.

Many of her students have pursued performing careers.  Two are currently enrolled in music programs at universities and one has just completed her Master’s degree at UBC.  Several other students are currently applying for university voice studies.  Many have competed in the Provincial Festivals and won at the Intermediate level.  Others have been provincial candidates at all levels.

She initiated a program, called “Kids on Broadway”, in Summerland and Kelowna, and ran these programs for ten years, including last summer.  It had tremendous value for young students as they learned to make their way around the stage and get involved in the characters.

For festivals, she encourages her students to take part both in the Broadway classes, as many as possible, and in the classical voice section.

She orchestrates three recitals a year and, of course, encourages participation in Kiwanis Festivals, both in Penticton and Kelowna, if the desire is there.  In addition, she provides the opportunity to work through the Royal Conservatory of Music exam programs, which broaden the understanding of what it takes to “make music” and build musicianship.

The repertoire that she uses is quite varied, beginning with folk and art songs, lieder, oratorio and, where appropriate, opera, and of course, the Broadway music.  Her approach to singing is very technically driven, with lots of work with the breath, support, placement, and a good, clear, ringing sound.

Lynda loves teaching singing.  She continues to inform herself about recent studies on the voice with the Voice Clinic in Vancouver, and keeps up-to-date with musical happenings  across Canada.  She looks forward to working with many prospective performers in Penticton, Summerland and Kelowna.  Lynda will be only with us temporarily and then one of her students Madison Johnson will take over for Lynda in February.  We welcome Lynda to Summerland School of Dance and are lucky to have such an experienced instructor to teach for us.

Jake Evans- Hip Hop and Break Dancing

Jake Evans, from Halifax Nova Scotia, began practicing the art of urban dance late in 1998 but with little urban culture to draw from on the east
coast of Canada, found his passion was a definite struggle. Finally in the summer of 2001, he was able to attend proper classes in L.A. The intensive was hosted by the Guzman-Sanchez brothers who were showcased in Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video. This changed everything for Evans as he had now been given a foundation that was correct in relation to the origins of urban styles. Being the only urban dancer on the east to actually travel and train, Evans quickly made a reputation performing, instructing and tirelessly promoting Popping, Locking and Breaking in the Atlantic Provinces.
Almost all of the dance crews and events on the east can be traced back to this enthusiastic ambassador.  In 2005, Evans was awarded a professional development grant from the Atlantic government to train with the Electric Boogaloos. Also, one of Jake's students, Natalie Lyons, made the top 20 for SYTYCD Canada, season 2,    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ksYBqGo8dA
Media, event, competition and print appearances are too many to name. Most notable however is a brief dance sequence on Showcase's Trailer Park Boys in 2002.  His training has continued for the last decade with the Electric Boogaloos' Poppin Pete and Suga Pop, 7Gemz/Rock Steady Crew's Ken Swift, Ill Kosby, Caleaf Sellars, Don Campbell, Greg Pope, Licorice Lloyd, Luther Brown and many more.  Based currently in Penticton BC, Jake still passionately travels coast to coast every year instructing and attending classes in the art of urban dance including  his first year at Summerland School of Dance.

Tasha Waycott - Ballroom

This will be Tasha's 5th year teaching.
